In the last decade, the number of KPOP groups in Korea has been growing. This clearly indicates that more and more people are embracing and accepting the kpop culture. This has also led to a dynamic industry where the artists are always
trying to outdo each other. Besides Korea, this new wave is also being experienced in the surrounding regions. Countries such as Japan, Philippines, Singapore, and many others are also listening to this genre of music. In 2014, the competition for the top spot has been quite tight. The following Korean kpop boy groups take the top 10 slots:10. Beast
Beast also known as B2ST is a South Korean band comprised of six members. The members are Yoon Doo-joon, Son Dong-woon, Jang Hyun-seung, Yang Yo-seob, Lee Gi-kwang, and Yong Jun-hyung. The groups first debut single “Beast Is the B2ST” was released on October 2009. In 2011, they released “Fiction and Fact” which was their first complete album. They have also won a number of awards such as M.net’s Triple Crown, Bonsang award courtesy of Seoul Music Awards, Artist of the Year award (Melon Music Awards, and much more.
9. TVXQ (DBSK)
TVXQ or in full Tong Fang Xien Qi is one of the oldest kpop boy groups. It was formed in 2003 and also comes in other names such as Tohonshinki, TVfXQ, or DBSK (Dong Bang Shin Ki.” The name simply stands for “The Rising Gods from the EAST”. It is a South Korean group that sings in k-pop, R&B, and Dance. The group formed by S.M. Entertainment comprises of 5 members. They are Max Changmin, U-Know Yunho, Micky Yoochun, Hero Jaejoong, and Xiah Junsu. They rose to stardom upon the releasing “Hug” in 2004.This also happened to be their first single and did quite well in the MIAK charts.
8. 2PM
2PM is also known as “Beastly Idols.”They are originally based in Seoul, Korea. 2PM was a splinter group from a larger group that was known as “One Day” and consisted of 11 members. After the split, 2AM and 2PM were formed. The members of this group are Taecyeon, Junho, Jun.K, Wooyoung, and Chansung. Their former leader was Jay Park, who left the group at the beginning of 2010. They are known for their electric and acrobatic dance styles that keep their audience on their toes. Besides k-pop, they also sing in hip-hop, R&B, Dance, and pop.
7. Shinee
Shine was founded in 2008 and is managed by SM Entertainment. The South Korean boy group sings in various genres which include R&B, pop, Dance, and Electronic. Its membership consists of Min ho, New, Key, Jonghyun, and Taemin. Their first debut single was “Replay” which was released on the 25th of May, 2008. In their singing career, they have been nominated and also won several achievements. Shinee members have also starred in reality shows. In addition, they are famous for their trendy fashion nicknamed “Shinee Trend.”
6. Super Junior
Super Junior is a South Korean kpop group. It was started in 2005.The group started with 12 members but currently has 13. They are Leeteuk, Hankyung, Sungmin, Heechel, Yesung, Shindong, Kibum, Kyuyun, Donghae, Eunhyuk, Sungmin, Siwona and Ryeowook. Super Junior is known for their “Korean Wave” locally known as “Hallyu.” The track that brought publicity to the group was “Sorry Sorry” which was released in 2009.Thy sing in various genres of music such as Electronic, R&B, Pop, and Dance.
5. MBLAQ
MBLAQ simply stands for Music Boys Live in Absolute Quality. This is a boy band from South Korea that was created by “Rain” who is a well known entertainer in South Korea. The group has four members. They are Cheondung, Seungho, Lee Joon, and G.O. When they debuted in 15th of October 2009, they also released a single “Just BLAQ.” The single topped many charts in the region both online as well as offline.
4. CNBLUE
CNBLUE was formed in 2009 in Seoul, South Korea. Its name CN stands for Code Blue while BLUE are the initials of the individual images of the four members. The members who include Lee- hyun (vocals, lead guitar), Lee Jung-Shun (Vocals, bass guitar), Kong Min-yuk (vocals & drums), and Jung Yong-haw (rhythm guitar & lead vocals) sing in kpop, pop, and rock. The band debuted on 19th of August, 2009 and released “Now or never” which was their first mini album.
3. Big Bang
When talking about the group “Big Bang,” one thing comes into mind. Urban style of music alongside flashy fashion and style. The group was formed in the year 2006.It is comprised of 5 members namely Seungri, T.O.P, Daesung, G-Dragon, and Taeyang. This South Korean Kpop group is managed by YG Entertainment. Big Bang has earned the respect of many by their ability to compose and produce their own music. “Lies” is the single that brought fame to the group. Besides producing well liked albums such as “Haru Haru” and “Last Farewell”, they have also won awards such as “Best Male Group”, “Song of the Year”, “Artist of the Year”, and many others.
2. Infinite
Infinite is without doubt one of the most prolific kpop boy groups in South Korea. The group is made up of 7 members. They are Kim Sunggyu (Leader, Main Vocalist), Jang Dongwoo (Lead Rapper and dancer), Nam Woohyun (Main Vocalist), Lee Howon (Main rapper and Dancer), Lee Sungyeol (Vocalist, Rapper), Kim Myungsoo (Vocalist), and Lee Sungjong (Vocalist).The group’s debut album “Come Back Again” which was released in June 2010 proved to be an instant hit. Other popular tracks from Infinite include First Invasion, Evolution, Over the Top, and many others.
1. EXO
EXO is Chinese-South Korean boy band which was formed in 2012.It is regarded as one of the most successful Korean kpop boy groups. The group comprises of 12 members who are sub grouped into 2 groups. These are EXO-K and EXO-M. The group is managed and produced by S.M. Entertainment. The group made a huge impact in the music impact right from the word “Go.”Their first single “Mama” topped the Chinese music charts within the first day. It also made it to the top 10 most viewed videos on YouTube.
If the current market trend is anything to go buy, 2014 is going to be very exciting year for both artists as well as listeners. Already, some of the groups are already causing ripples in the music scene. The groups in question have already hit record YouTube views. They have also toured the region extensively. In addition, they are performing to sold-out concerts both in the region as well as beyond borders. Such groups include Infinite, EXO, as well as Big Bang.
